CHAPTER THIRTY-ONE

Uncertainty.

It was part of why Laura became a physician. The career had its challenges, but it did virtually guarantee employment. The world would always need doctors.

It wasn’t just employment certainty that appealed to Laura. It was the work. Helping people had meaning for her. It made her feel valued.

All of that—the certainty, her self-worth, her entire career—had come crashing down with Samir’s big lie and even bigger betrayal.

He had torn apart the life she had carefully constructed, forcing her to start over in the coldest, darkest, most remote place on Earth.

And, by a twist of fate, Samir was here, still sleeping in the leaned-back passenger seat.

“Laura,” Transport said, voice low. “We have reached the end of the crevasse. I’m turning now.”

The vehicle slowed until the tracks on the right side were almost still as it turned ninety degrees, rolled forward slowly, and repeated the maneuver, like a tank on a battlefield executing a turn to retreat. The transport surged ahead with more speed now, the fissure on the right.

The more she thought about it, the more convinced Laura was that going to McMurdo was a bad idea. But if not McMurdo Station, then where could they go?

Laura tapped the screen, opening a map showing the South Pole Traverse and the nearby stations.
